Our Mother Nature contributes immense flowering and non-flowering flora to our life. We are the receivers of numerous wholesome and nutritious fruits, vegetables and nuts for consumption and use on the whole body.
At PURU, we use a mix of seed, flower and fruit oils in our suncare and skincare products.
Seed oils form their own subset under vegetable oils (the umbrella term for any oil of plant origin) and can carry their weight in gold for their numerous health benefits.
| Did you know?
Did you know fruit seed oils are one of the only substances that can penetrate deeply into your skin? This is because seed oils are natural emollients, packed with vitamins and nutrients that are recognised by our bodies.
The teeny tiny seeds housed inside these natural bounties hold a plethora of benefits that will not only topically improve our outer but also nourish us. Finding the right oils that work best for you and enhance your skin texture is not as hard as you think! Not all seed oils should be treated equally, and doing the proper research is key to choosing what you put in and on your body. PURU always chooses natural derivatives and as little processing during production as possible.
Your daily habits
| Nuts, Fruits, Vegetables?
The seeds from nuts, fruits and vegetables can produce plentiful organic oils that are the source of nutrients, flavonoids, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, making them the ultimate powerful multitaskers. These effectively heal a host of skin concerns, and some of these don’t even need an introduction, like sunflower oil, a backbone in many cosmetic formulations for its deep conditioning properties and rich fatty acid profile. The beauty industry thrives on trending and new ingredients, however, some of these tiny seeds like sunflower oil are so potent – and being over 4500 years old, they can be more valuable than the same weight in gold flakes!
| Not all seed oils are harmful
It is worth noting here that social media trends can unfortunately spread many mistruths and misconceptions, quite quickly! A recent 2022 trend has promoted all seed oils to be harmful, and many claims focus on 8 particular seed oils. No clinical studies have been conducted on these 8 seed oils, and are largely opinion based. Research on all vegetable oils and their health benefits is widely available, and it is scientific fact that all seed oils contain a 100% fatty acid profile. This profile is made up of MUFAs (monounsaturated fatty acids), PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acids), and SFAs (saturated fatty acids). Omega 3 and Omega 6 are found in the PUFAs from seed oils, which are an essential part of our diet, and each oil’s health value is dependent on the fact content (the lower fat content the better). Generally speaking, limit the use of seed oils high in SFAs and opt for seed oils with great MUFAs and PUFAs profiles.
Seed Oils Not Toxic
Seed oils are not toxic as social media has led many to believe, and doing due diligence here is key. Look for cold-pressed oils and avoid highly processed oils in your diet. Seed oils are used in beauty products and sunscreen due to their natural antioxidants and are now being increasingly recognised for their effects on skin health and photoprotection.
Many seed oils are included in cosmetic formulations for their stability, moisturising and therapeutic properties. Products like serums, cleansing oils and moisturisers can work to balance and restore sebum production, resulting in a clearer complexion. So if you are of an oily skin type – don’t panic, oils like Tea Tree, Argan and Jojoba are non-comedogenic, and will help dissolve sebum build-up while being light in texture.
Ranging from acne, blemishes, scars and eczema, there are a whole host of stubborn skin concerns that oils can effectively tackle. Many seed oils are added to skincare to protect and support the skin barrier, and some seeds like cacao seed also infuse moisture to dry skin. In contrast, others like avocado seed oil prevent the darkening of the skin from long-term sun exposure.
PURU selectively chooses to formulate products that have oxidative stability and great chemistry between them. PURU uses only hand-pressed organic seed oils of the highest quality, a simple method of pressing the oil out of the seeds.
